Food: “Any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink or that plants absorb in order to maintain life and growth.”
This is food according to the Oxford Dictionaries. This is a terribly imprecise definition of what food is to me. Food does more than just maintain my life; it goes so far as to influence it. It doesn’t just make me grow but allows me to live life. It is a means of expression; I can express myself and perceive others through the means of food. Isn’t that why we’re all here, to connect with one another? To me, food is one of the best things for bringing people together. Dinner parties, holiday meals, school lunches, and family dinners are just a minuscule handful of examples of how food brings us together. This is just one of many reasons I chose this topic. As a runner I have to watch how and what I eat and drink. I must stay hydrated, eat enough calories, and eat healthy. This makes food an important factor in my life and I want to learn more. There are so many different diets and trends and cultures that exist and these fascinate me: “Why do they have certain delicacies like caviar?”, “Why is there a new ‘superfood’ every year?”, and, “What’s the point of certain diets?”. The way food is produced is also of interest to me. I am very passionate about the environment and how we treat it. The food production and processing industries directly affect the environment and can play a huge role in global warming and habitat destruction. Overall, health and nutrition are very important in everyone's lives’ and should be looked at carefully. The food industry touches almost everyone on the planet and is very influential. The topic of food is highly relevant in most people’s lives, especially in mine as a runner and all around lover of food. Food surrounds many aspects of my life and is something I would love to dig deeper into.
